Today I headed to the zoo since they have free admission on Canada Day. I arrived when the zoo opened and it was packed. The parking lot was like a zoo. Here are some photos.. White (black) bear. A few years ago people discovered a white cub with its black colored mother bear. People were feeding the bears along the highway which is stupid thing to do. The mother ended up being hit by a car. Luckily the zoo adopted the cub. Her name is Maskwa which means 'bear' in the Cree (Indian) language. Grizzly Bear. Not found in the Province I live in. G. Bears are found in Alberta and British Columbia. Amur Leopard Meerkats Prairie Dogs

Nurse shark checking out a guy standing in 20 inches of water. I heard nurse sharks aren't dangerous unless you provoke or tease them. Here is the video.. www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PWnRoXP9_U

Are they the birds with that crazy laugh? If it is them, I heard them once on TV and that laugh is hilarious!

I rescued a betta fish/siamese fighting fish in Autumn 2006 from a gift store. The woman had the fish behind the counter in a bowl of filthy water about 1 inch high. I asked her about him and she said 'I hate fish! A friend gave it to me and I plan on letting it die slowly." I was horrified and said I would take him. She gave him to me and said "I don't know why anyone would want one of these, but here take him!" I named him Kanoa which means "Free" in Hawaiian. Kanoa had some funny habits such as hiding in his plant upside down or face first. Sadly, I found Kanoa dead this morning. He seemed sickly the day before. I'm just glad he lived a happier life with me. Here is his pic...

Sorry, I accidently posted this in the other thread in regards to other pets(not birds) passing away. Maybe someone can delete that thread. I realized it should have been posted here. This morning I opened his cage door and tried to capture Ember to give him his meds. He flew into the living room and I eventually put a cloth over top of him and carried him back into the kitchen. Once I had him on his back, slightly upright he started to thrash about wildly. He only got a tiny dose of the medicine. I quickly decided to put him back in his cage so I wouldn't upset him anymore. Anyways I gently went to put him on his perch and noticed no movement, he was gone. I phoned the vet's office to tell them what happened. The vet phoned me back and said he was sorry to hear what happened and that small birds are prone to panic and can easily have a 'heart attack' when they are upset. I wish I would have left him alone in the living room and waited until later to give him his meds. I feel so bad. I couldn't believe he was dead, I kept touching him and realized he was gone. I dug up a small area near my garden and buried him this afternoon. I can't believe he is gone, it is so quiet in the house. I will miss his funny antics and chirps. I am so use to him flying into the computer room, sitting on my head and shoulder. Everytime a bird flies by outside I look. Why did he have to die!? He was only five years old.

Thanks Karen!
I will look for the baby bottle stuff. If I can't find it I will use bleach. The sky has been cloudy for a long time. Hopefully we will have sunny skies soon. If not it would be okay to let the cage air dry in the house, would that be sufficient?

Since Ember's passing I wasn't able to think about purchasing another bird. Now I am close to being ready.
Ember passed away from some type of respiratory illness, took him to the vet etc, few months plus ago.
I'm worried that his cage could have germs from his illness and I really want to clean it before buying another one. In the past, before Ember was sick, I would take him out of the cage, and wash it out once in awhile with warm-hot water.
Someone told me to use 10% bleach solution (bleach and water) ,rinse well. I am concerned about using bleach. Even though I may rinse well, there some could still be embedded in the cage bars, fumes etc.
I know chemicals are a big no no around birds. Are there safe non toxic cleaners you can buy at a pet store or vet office?
Or would hot water be sufficient?
I plan on throwing out his old perches which were tree branches and finding new ones.
Thanks!

lol! Oh yes he was a crabby little guy, but thank goodness he is back to his usual goofy self. I guess it is like pms of the bird world, lol.
That is good to know this is normal. I thought maybe something was wrong with him.
