Yup, you have seen me around I think. I posted as a guest under the same name in the guest section. I just have budgies, but I love 'em. I hope to get a few more pairs this summer. I'd like to order a green straightjacket, please!

Hello everyone! As you can see, I finally got around to registering. I currently have 8 parakeets and breed them in my outdoor aviary. I first saw this forum when I was googling the name of a Bird Store near me called Bird Crazy. So, that's about it....I'm looking forward to learning more here!

I can't remember ever giving my daughter a chicken bone to chew on either so I reckon I'm safe there too Actually my parents gave chicken bones to my older siblings (just to chew on) when they were teething I believe. (obviously before they started talking about the splinter stuff) When they tried it with me, apparently I crunched down on the bone and actually ate it... so I only got them once. :)Now that I think about it dogs and kids do gulp things down a lot more than parrots... Good thing Biggles and the rest can't read the forum, they'd probably be mad at me for trying to take away their treats.

I love Biggles! I don't want to be a wet blanket, since all of your birds obviously love the chicken bones, but I've heard and read that you aren't supposed to give chicken bones to kids and pets because they splinter easily and can cause internal injuries. Do you do anything in particular to keep this from happening, or is this just not a big deal? I missed this thread, apparently...

For budgies, you should always have a basic parakeet seed mix available. You can get this at just about any pet store. I usually try to avoid mixes with a lot of the bright colored "treats" in them because they are fattening. Every other day or so, also give them well washed raw fruits and veggies. Lots of people feed different veggies, but my birds' favorites are romaine lettuce, orange in small bits, and broccoli. One thing they can't have is avocado. Budgies also need to have calcium for beaks and bones, so make sure they always have cuttlebone to nibble on. Nibbling on cuttlebone also helps keep the beak at the right length. You can get that at a pet store too, and they often have clips to attach it to the side of the cage. For occasional treats, don't give them human food. If you want to give them something special, give sections of spray millet (from the pet store as well ) but not everyday or everything, or it is too fattening and they will get bored of it. As far as I know, budgies don't eat nuts... I would think they probably wouldn't be that good for them. Hope this helps!

Lovely indeedy! I love the black and white strips/bars, makes a striking contrast with the rooster's comb.

I know that several bird breeders use eucalyptus branches and leaves in their aviary's and the birds supposedly love it. However, I've also read accounts of birds dying from eating eucalyptus. Are only some parts of eucalyptus trees safe, or are there toxic and safe varieties? Can anybody shed some light on this? Has anyone used eucalyptus before?

Brave Billy! I had a peruvian whose hair just kept growing, so I had to give him baths and clip his hair, or he would turn into a walking mop. Your pics are so cute they keep making me want to go out and buy another one.

Aw! How did he do with the water? Mine always were terrified of baths, but with the long haired piggies, baths are a nescessity.
